it follows the dark souls formula as strongly as any other clone, but it's not afraid to present those ideas from different angles.Īnyone who's curious should play the thespian feast demo because it's a very accurate slice of what the rest of the game is like, albeit a little rougher around the edges. for a game that's been knocked a bit in reviews for not having enough of its own identity, there's a lot of neat quirks here that are pretty charming even if they're not really gamechangers.
HELLPOINT PS4 PHYSICAL RELEASE UPGRADE
Love the way weapons upgrade by use and give various passive and active abilities, love the weird obtuseness of the black hole hour, the hordes, the monoliths (which I haven't quite figured out yet) and the frequent "can I actually go there?" moments that come from the addition of platforming. the amount of hidden walls, circuitous side passages, and even (seemingly) optional bosses seems pretty impressive so far and judging by the achievements I managed to sequence break fairly substantially too. once you open the world up a bit there are some fairly interesting locations from a design perspective if not always an architectural one though. I agree that the areas could use some more cosmetic variety, but it works well enough for me in the same way dead space/FEAR's homogeneity work to create a sense of place. but the exploration, atmosphere, secrets and level design are better than any other dark souls clone we've had so far, it's easy for me to overlook those kinds of missteps. Main issues I'm having so far are the difficulty being on the easy side (though there are items that function similarly to bonfire ascetics) the enemy variety being a bit weak, and a couple bosses being reused as common enemies to comical degrees in one area. It doesn’t appear so but the game runs with an unlocked framerate so the additional power will be used to try and maintain that performance target.ĭifferent people are gonna have different opinions but I think it's better than LOTF in absolutely every way and better than the surge in almost as many.
